Little Nightmares III: What We Know So Far

Little Nightmares III is the much-anticipated continuation of the critically acclaimed horror puzzle-platformer series. Known for its eerie atmosphere, surreal storytelling, and disturbing yet beautiful visuals, the third installment promises to push the series into new territory — both narratively and mechanically.

A New Journey, New Protagonists

Unlike the first two entries that followed the stories of Six and Mono, Little Nightmares III introduces two entirely new characters: Low and Alone. These two children are trapped in a world known as The Spiral, a bizarre and fragmented dimension filled with interconnected and ever-shifting locations. Each area is ruled by grotesque enemies in true Little Nightmares fashion — uncanny, oversized adult-like figures that reflect twisted themes of childhood fear and trauma.

Low and Alone each have unique abilities, which are expected to play a major role in the game's puzzles and platforming. For the first time in the series, the game will feature online co-op multiplayer, allowing two players to explore the nightmare together. Solo players will be able to play with AI controlling the second character.

Gameplay and Atmosphere

Staying true to its roots, Little Nightmares III continues with side-scrolling platforming, physics-based puzzles, and stealth-based exploration. The gameplay has always been about vulnerability — you're small, fragile, and constantly hunted. The world remains largely wordless, relying on environmental storytelling, subtle sound design, and artistic direction to build its haunting narrative.

The environments shown so far are disturbingly creative. One standout area, Necropolis, is a desolate desert filled with the echoes of a lost civilization and haunted by a mysterious entity. Each new zone promises new enemies and psychological themes, adding layers to the dark fairy-tale ambiance that fans have come to love.

Development and Changes

Little Nightmares III is being developed by Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology. This marks the first time the mainline series is not developed by Tarsier Studios, who created the first two titles. Despite this, publisher Bandai Namco has assured fans that the new developers are fully committed to maintaining the core tone and style of the franchise.

Supermassive's experience with narrative-driven horror is expected to bring new depth to the storytelling, possibly with more branching paths or choices — though details on this are still under wraps.

What to Expect

The biggest shift in Little Nightmares III is the addition of co-op gameplay, which could transform how players experience fear and tension. The emotional loneliness of the earlier titles may evolve into something more nuanced — fear shared is still fear, but it could also lead to unique moments of trust, cooperation, or separation.

Still, fans are cautiously optimistic. The series has built its reputation on isolation and helplessness, so the challenge for Supermassive will be preserving that tone while expanding the gameplay format.

Release Window

As of now, Little Nightmares III is expected to release in 2025, though a specific date has not been confirmed. It will be available on major platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and previous-gen consoles. A demo is rumored to be in the works or possibly appearing at upcoming game showcases.

Little Nightmares III has big shoes to fill. The previous games captivated players not just with scares, but with deep, symbolic storytelling and unforgettable world-building. With new protagonists, a new developer, and the bold move to multiplayer, the third entry could either redefine the series — or risk straying too far from what made it special. Either way, it's one of the most intriguing horror titles on the horizon.

Fans of psychological horror, dark aesthetics, and clever platforming puzzles should keep a close eye on this one.
